Gupta Ganga - Srinagar

Gupta Ganga is an ancient spring situated in the Ishber region on the eastern slopes overlooking Dal Lake in Srinagar. Known as the "Hidden Ganga," the site derives its name from the perennial waters that emerge mysteriously from the hillside, making it one of Kashmir's longstanding sacred springs.
For centuries, Gupta Ganga has been associated with Kashmir's rich tradition of spring sanctuaries, where natural water sources became focal points of settlement, pilgrimage, and worship. The surrounding region preserves memories of ancient teachers, rulers, and communities who regarded the spring as a place of both practical and spiritual significance.
Local traditions further associate Gupta Ganga with the visit of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya during his travels through Kashmir. It is believed that the Acharya recognized the sacred emergence of the hidden waters at this very spot and consecrated an Īśvara Liṅga where the river revealed herself to the world. Tradition holds that he regularly drew water from the spring to perform abhiṣekha to the Liṅga, sanctifying the site through worship and establishing it as a place of enduring reverence. Even today, the spring and the Liṅga together preserve the memory of this sacred association between the Acharya and the hidden Ganga of Kashmir.
