The Sri Dakshinamurthy Ashtaka

Dakshinamurthy — the young Guru seated beneath the banyan tree, teaching ancient sages through silence

Eight shlokas of philosophical inquiry, followed by a ninth praising the Guru’s all-pervading eightfold form and a closing tenth on the fruits of this recitation. One claim runs through them all: the Self is pure, unconditioned consciousness — and recognising this is the highest form of knowledge a human being can arrive at. Dakshinamurthy — depicted as a young Guru seated beneath a banyan tree, teaching ancient sages through silence — is the archetypal symbol of the Guru who transmits knowledge of the Self. The Ashtaka is Adi Shankaracharya’s account of what that transmission contains.

Shloka I

The World as Reflection

Vishwam Darpana Drishyamana Nagari Tulyam — the universe as a city reflected in a mirror. The first shloka establishes the fundamental Advaitic claim: the perceived world is a superimposition on the unchanging Self, as vivid and as unreal as a reflection.

The college years are the last window before professional identity hardens into permanent grooves. Vivekadeepti enters that window — not with answers, but with the questions that make answers necessary.

How the Engagement Works

01

Invitation or Coordination

A faculty member or student coordinator reaches out. No fee — free of charge to all institutions.

02

The Session

A 1.5–2 hour session: opening inquiry, exposition of the Dakshinamurthy Ashtaka, open dialogue.

03

Dakshinaasya Darshini

Student teams propose a project demonstrating the tatvas of the Sri Dakshinamurthy Ashtaka through hands-on science demonstrations.

04

Continued Engagement

Each Vivekadeepti session was held on a college campus — an experienced teacher leading an open inquiry, one classroom at a time, across colleges and universities in Karnataka and beyond.

2 · Darshini Projects Proposed

From session to exhibit

Following the sessions, student teams proposed Dakshinaasya Darshini exhibit projects translating the tatvas of the Sri Dakshinamurthy Ashtaka into hands-on science demonstrations. Teams worked under the guidance of mentors over nine months through the Vedanta Makethon toward the flagship exhibition.

2026 Inaugural Program · Part Two

Culmination: The Maha Samarpane

Preparation converged into a single civilisational moment — mass chanting at the Maha Samarpane, and the Dakshinaasya Darshini exhibition brought to life.

1 · Maha Samarpane

Mass chanting, Palace Grounds

More than 70,000 youth gathered at Bengaluru’s Palace Grounds for a collective chanting of Sri Dakshinamurthy Ashtakam — Adi Shankaracharya’s profound hymn on the Guru and the knowledge of the Self. The gathering received the anugraha of Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Sannidhanam, and was further graced by HH Sri Sri Shankara Bharati Mahaswamiji and HH Sri Sri Brahmananda Bharati Swamiji, bringing together thousands of young people in a powerful expression of a living tradition and its continuing relevance to a new generation.
