Bhadrakali Mandir - Amritsar

Bhadrakali Mandir is an important Devi shrine associated with the wider sacred complex and Devi worship traditions of Amritsar. The shrine is dedicated to Maa Bhadrakali, a powerful form of the Divine Mother representing both protection and transformative Shakti.
Local tradition maintains that the Bhadrakali shrine preserves an older continuity of Devi worship within the sacred landscape of Amritsar. Oral narratives associated with the temple connect the shrine with the revival and re-establishment of Śākta worship traditions in northwestern Bharat.
The principal Bhadrakali Vigraha is traditionally believed by local custodians and devotees to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya during his travels through the region.
A distinctive spiritual feature of the shrine is the presence of a Soumya Kali form situated behind the principal Bhadrakali idol. This dual presence symbolically represents:
- the Ugra (fierce) aspect of the Divine Mother in Bhadrakali,
- and the compassionate, benevolent dimension in the Soumya Kali form.
