PhD Scholars: Twenty-five scholars, carrying the textual tradition forward

A sustained journey of research in Advaita Vedanta — from its academic association with Tumkur University to its recognition by Karnataka Sanskrit University in 2023 — guiding 25 PhD scholars, with 15 doctorates already conferred, across five core research areas.

Advaita Kosha & Prasthana Bharati (Vidwat Sabha)

Two parallel traditions of collective textual scholarship: the Advaita Kosha, a concept-organised compendium built over two years by four resident Vidwans, and Prasthana Bharati, a biannual five-day gathering of traditional scholars debating the core concepts of Advaita Vedanta.

Advaita Kosha — two years, four Vidwans, one compendium

Not every research output here is a doctorate. The Advaita Kosha is a separate, sustained textual undertaking — a systematic encyclopaedic compendium of Vedantic sentences and concepts, built over two years of dedicated work by four resident Vidwans. Rather than organising the corpus by source text, the Advaita Kosha organises it by concept, so that a single term — Brahman, Avidyā, Adhyāsa — can be traced across its entire range of classical usage. It sits alongside the doctoral program as the institution's other model of deep research: collective, traditionally trained, and built for reference rather than argument.

Prasthana Bharati (Vidwath Sabha)

Twice a year — during Shankara Jayanthi and the Chaturmasya of HH Sri Sri Shankara Bharati Mahaswamiji — Vedanta Bharati convenes Prasthana Bharati (Vidwath Sabha), a five-day gathering at which more than fifty traditional scholars from different parts of the country come together to debate the core concepts of Advaita Vedanta. Chaired by HH, the Sabha unfolds as sustained scholarly dialogue rather than a sequence of lectures: positions are argued, classical texts are cited and contested, and questions left open on one day carry forward into the next. It stands among the institution's oldest traditions of collective textual scholarship, and the most visible expression of the same inquiry that grounds its doctoral and Advaita Kosha research.

Tumkur University Dialogues

A series of national conferences held jointly with Tumkur University, exploring the continuing relevance of Vedanta and drawing scholars, researchers, students and practitioners into serious academic dialogue.

Vedanta Bharati – Tumkur University: Advaita in Dialogue

In a pioneering academic collaboration, Vedanta Bharati and Tumkur University brought together scholars, researchers, students and practitioners from diverse disciplines and regions through a series of national conferences devoted to exploring the continuing relevance of Vedanta. The “Vedanta: A Holistic Approach” conference (2011) examined Vedanta not merely as a philosophical system, but as a comprehensive vision with implications for human life, society, ethics and knowledge, creating a forum where diverse perspectives could meet in serious dialogue. A subsequent conference (2012) on “Contributions of Sri Vidyaranya” turned attention to one of the great figures of the Advaita tradition — exploring his profound contributions to Vedanta and the wider śāstra tradition, as well as his role in the intellectual and cultural flowering associated with Vijayanagara. Together, these gatherings exemplified Vedanta Bharati's endeavour to take Advaita beyond the confines of traditional scholarship and create a living space for enquiry, dialogue and the renewal of India's knowledge traditions.

Frontier Inquiry: Where Upanishadic Wisdom Engages Contemporary Science

Since 2017, this same inquiry has moved beyond the text and into structured dialogue with neuroscience, physics, mathematics and clinical practice — across 40+ residential retreats and, more recently, the Chidrūpam initiative. This is not adjacent activity: it is the applied edge of the same research tradition, addressed to open questions rather than closed ones.
