Sardar Government Museum - Jodhpur

A documented stop on Adi Shankaracharya's route across India.

At the Jodhpur Museum, several ancient Vigrahas of deep spiritual and historical significance were examined during the course of the visit. One particular Vigraha presently catalogued by the museum as belonging to the 12th century is traditionally understood to be a Vigraha with a connection to Adi Shankaracharya, despite the current dating attributed to it by the museum records. Based on traditional observations, iconographic features, and associated local understandings, the Vigraha is believed to carry a direct connection to Adi Shankaracharya and his presence in the region.
Another remarkable Vigraha depicts two divine forms in a vertical arrangement — one at the lower section and another above, locally identified with Narasimha and a Viṣṇu-related form (Varaha).
The museum collection also includes an ancient Lakshmi Narayana Vigraha of notable antiquity and craftsmanship.
Particularly significant were three Vigrahas identified as having originated from the Nagaur region, indicating the continuity and spread of sacred worship traditions connected with that region and suggesting the presence and movement of spiritual traditions and Adi Shankaracharya’s visit to Nagaur as well.
These Vigrahas displayed within the collection was also understood to preserve traditional connections, further reflecting the wider spiritual and cultural imprint preserved across Rajasthan through temple traditions, iconography, and local memory.
