Adi Shankaracharya's Visit

  • Sri Sheetala Mata Temple at Nariyawal lies in the ancient Pañcāla region, whose archaeological record extends deep into the early historic period and whose sacred geography is closely associated with the Mahābhārata tradition.
  • Local tradition remembers Nariyawal as an ancient settlement and the temple as a place where the Pāṇḍavas worshipped Sheetala Devi during their period of exile. The shrine is regarded as one of the oldest and most important Devi temples of the Bareilly region. The precinct also contains several old wells, one of which is itself worshipped as part of the kṣetra; local accounts of archaeological inspection have noted the use of very old bricks in the remains around the temple.
  • The Shaankara Jyothi Prakasha tradition at the kṣetra adds another layer to this ancient sacred continuity. Beneath the present image of Sheetala Devi is preserved an older vigraha, revered as the form of the Devi to which Ādi Śaṅkarācārya is believed to have given his anugraha during his visit to Nariyawal.
  • The tradition recalls that, during a period when other religious currents had acquired considerable influence in Pañcāla, Adi Śaṅkara visited the shrine to strengthen the protection and continuity of the Vaidika way of life; he is remembered as having visited the kṣetra, offered his anugraha and departed without staying here.
  • Local recitations further preserve the memory of the Gaṅgā once flowing close to this place, with its course subsequently moving away by about twelve kilometres. The prosperity associated with that earlier river course is itself remembered as part of Nariyawal's ancient history.
  • Thus, the Sheetala Mata shrine brings together the Pañcāla–Mahābhārata memory, the ancient presence of the Devi, the changing sacred geography of the Gaṅgā, and the living tradition of Adi Śaṅkara's anugraha.

The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
