Maya Devi Mandir - Haridwar
Visited 5 October 2026 during the 2026 Sampoorna Bharata Yatra.

Adi Shankaracharya's Visit
- Maya Devi Temple, situated in the ancient heart of Haridwar, is one of the oldest sacred centres of the kṣetra and is traditionally regarded as a Siddha Peetha. The city itself was known as Mayapuri, and the presence of Maya Devi is therefore integral to the sacred identity of Haridwar.
- The Skanda Purāṇa tradition identifies Mayapuri as an important tīrtha and associates the region with the worship of Devī. The sanctum preserves the worship of Maya Devi, together with Kali and Kamakhya, reflecting the ancient understanding of Śakti manifesting through different forms. Along with Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi, Maya Devi forms part of the important Devi circuit of Haridwar.
- Local tradition records that Ādi Śaṅkarācārya visited the Maya Devi kṣetra and offered worship at the temple during his journey through the sacred landscape of Haridwar. His presence here acquires particular significance in the context of his wider engagement with the ancient tīrthas of the region, where diverse streams of Vaidika worship had continued through the centuries.
- Maya Devi, as the presiding Śakti of Mayapuri, represents one of the oldest layers of this sacred geography. For the Shaankara Jyothi Prakasha Yatra, the temple therefore marks another point in Śaṅkarācārya's passage through Haridwar, honouring the enduring presence of Śakti and the continuity of the Vaidika sacred tradition in this ancient tīrtha.
