Mansa Devi Mandir - Haridwar
Visited 5 October 2026 during the 2026 Sampoorna Bharata Yatra.

Adi Shankaracharya's Visit
- Mansa Devi Temple, situated atop Bilwa Parvat in the Shivalik range, is one of the ancient sacred centres of Haridwar and is traditionally identified with Bilwa Tīrtha, one of the Panch Tīrthas of the kṣetra. Mansa Devi is revered as a form of Śakti, and the deity here is regarded by local tradition as Swayambhu Mansa Devi.
- The shrine is a Siddha Peetha where devotees have worshipped the Devi as the fulfiller of sincere aspirations. The temple thus forms an important part of Haridwar's ancient sacred geography, alongside the other major Devi shrines of the kṣetra.
- According to the local tradition preserved at the kṣetra, Ādi Śaṅkarācārya stayed here during the Dharma Samāveśa at Kankhal, accompanied by his four principal śiṣyas.
- On Māgha Śuddha Dvitīyā, in the presence of Mansa Devi and before a Nanda Dīpa lit by Śaṅkarācārya, he is said to have given the four śiṣyas the Chandramauleśvara, directing that it be worshipped perpetually for Loka Kalyāṇa.
- The Nanda Dīpa itself is remembered as having been kindled with a specific sankalpa: that the Upaniṣadic Vidyā should remain eternally practised, preserved and transmitted.
- The temple also preserves an Īśvara Liṅga traditionally regarded as having been pratiṣṭhā by Śaṅkarācārya, together with a śaṅkha traditionally associated with his worship. In the living memory of the kṣetra, therefore, Mansa Devi is not only a shrine of Śakti but also a place associated with Śaṅkara's resolve to preserve the continuity of Upaniṣadic Vidyā and Vaidika worship for Loka Kalyāṇa.
The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras.
