Mankameshwar Mandir - Lucknow

A documented stop on Adi Shankaracharya's route across India.

The Maṅkāmēśvara Mahādeva Mandira stands on the sacred banks of the Gomatī river in Daliganj, Lucknow — one of the most ancient Śiva temples in the Gaṅgā-Gomatī corridor. The Śivaliṅga here is believed to have been installed by Śrī Lakṣmaṇa himself in the Tretā Yuga, when — overwhelmed after leaving Sītā Devī at the āśrama of Ṛṣi Vālmīki — he halted at the Gomatī and prayed before Mahādeva for inner peace.
King Navdhanu later built a temple here with twenty-three golden urns, which was plundered and destroyed by Yemeni invaders in the 12th century. The temple was subsequently restored by Nāga Sādhus of the Juṇā Akhāḍā and stands today in that reconstructed form.
The name Maṅkāmēśvara — the Lord who fulfils the deepest wish of the heart — defines the devotional character of this kṣetra. Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, during his Yatra through this sacred corridor, blessed this ancient kṣetra with his presence — his anugraha flowing into a tīrtha already consecrated by Lakṣmaṇa's own devotion on the banks of the Gomatī.
