Adi Shankaracharya's Visit
- Makkumath, also known as Makhmutt, in Uttarakhand is the traditional winter seat of the deity of Tungnath Temple, one of the five Panch Kedar shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- When the high-altitude Tungnath Temple closes for winter, the deity’s ceremonial image is brought to Makkumath, where worship continues until the shrine reopens in spring.
- According to local tradition, the Tungnath Īśvara Liṅga has connections with Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, and local accounts place this event in the seventh century CE.
- The temple complex contains several smaller Vigrahas and a shrine dedicated to Pārvatī. A Pādukā at the site is identified in the Shastras as belonging to Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, though tradition attributes its installation to Totakācārya. Local devotees worship the Pādukā and believe its spiritual power protects the place.
The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
