Situated near the present-day Raj Bhavan (Governor's House) in Shillong, the Ishwar Temple is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Nestled amidst the scenic Khasi Hills, the temple continues to serve as a place of daily worship and quiet spiritual reflection, preserving the enduring traditions of Meghalaya.
According to local traditions, Bhagavatpāda Ādi Śaṅkarācārya visited this sacred kṣetra during his Digvijaya across the northeastern frontiers of Bhārata. The Īśwara Liṅga enshrined at the temple is traditionally revered as having been consecrated (Pratiṣṭhā) by Bhagavatpāda. Local tradition further preserves that Bhagavatpāda stayed at the very site where the present-day Governor's House (Raj Bhavan) / State Guest House now stands before continuing his journey.
Today, Ishwar Temple stands as a quiet yet enduring symbol of Sanātana Dharma in the Khasi Hills. The kṣetra represents the continued preservation of sacred traditions associated with Bhagavatpāda and the timeless worship of Lord Shiva in the northeastern region of Bhārata.
