The Koteshwar Mahadev Temple, located near Narayan Sarovar at the western edge of Kutch, stands as a powerful Shiva kshetra overlooking the vast Arabian Sea.
Dedicated to Shiva as Koteshwar Mahadev, the temple marks one of the westernmost sacred points of India, where land meets the infinite waters, creating an atmosphere of deep stillness and transcendence.
The name “Koteshwar” is traditionally associated with the presence of countless forms (koti) of Shiva, symbolizing the boundless nature of the Divine.
Steeped in Puranic lore, the temple is connected to the legend of Ravana and the Atma Linga, with traditions describing how the Divine manifested here in multiple forms. The kshetra, situated close to Narayan Sarovar—one of the sacred Pancha Sarovars—forms part of a larger pilgrimage circuit that integrates both Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions.
