Adi Shankaracharya's Visit
- Kasar Devi Temple, situated on Kashyap Hill near Almora in Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region, is an ancient shrine dedicated to Goddess Kasar Devi, worshipped as a manifestation of the Divine Mother. Set amid pine and deodar forests, the temple occupies a striking position overlooking the Almora valley and the Himalayan ranges.Adjacent to the Devi Vigraha is a cave-like formation housing a Śiva Liṅga, which serves as a place for meditation and contemplation.
- Another cave-like shelter nearby provides a secluded setting conducive to deep meditation. Further uphill stands a Bhairava Temple, along with another shrine dedicated to Śaṅkara (Lord Śiva). The latter is distinguished by an Akhanda Jyoti—a continuously burning sacred lamp—maintained alongside local recitations, preserving the living traditions of worship and devotion at the Kṣetra.
- Kasar Devi also occupies an important place in the modern spiritual history of India through its association with Swami Vivekananda, who visited the Almora region in the 1890s and meditated in the surrounding area.
- The sacred Kṣetra of Kasar Devi is also associated with the spiritual legacy of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, and is traditionally regarded as having been blessed by Bhagawadpāda during his journey through the Himalayan region.
The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
