Kanakdurga Mandir - Jhargram

Kanakadurga Mandir, nestled amidst the tranquil forests of Chilkigarh in Jhargram, is an ancient and revered Devi kṣetra that has preserved the spiritual traditions of Devi worship for centuries. Alongside the shrine of Goddess Kanakadurga stands a Vishnu shrine, reflecting the harmonious coexistence of the Devi and Vaiṣṇava traditions that have enriched the region's spiritual heritage. Surrounded by dense forests and the serene landscape of the ancient Jangal Mahāl, the kṣetra continues to be a living centre of devotion and sacred practice.
According to long-standing local tradition, Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya stayed at this sacred site for five days in 612 CE, residing beneath a tree near the temple. During his stay, he is believed to have engaged extensively with the local mountain-dwelling communities, imparting the foundational principles of Sanātana Dharma and emphasising the importance of preserving righteous conduct in everyday life. His teachings are traditionally remembered as encompassing the proper observance of dharma, the sanctity of Nitya Achāra, and the systematic practice of Vivāha Paddhati and Pūjā Paddhati, thereby strengthening the Vaidika way of life among the local populace.
