Adi Shankaracharya's Visit
- Gopinath Temple, also known as Gopeshwar or Rudranath Temple, is an ancient Shiva temple in Gopeshwar, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. The main deity is a Svayambhu Shiva Linga, worshipped as Lord Rudra. The temple is built in the North Indian Nāgara style, with a tall stone tower decorated with chaitya-arch motifs.
- The Īśvara Liṅga and other Vigrahas in the temple are associated with Ādi Śaṅkarācārya. According to the tradition associated with his visit, Ādi Śaṅkarācārya stayed here to address the prevailing religious practices and support the revival and strengthening of Vaidika Dharma. A Kalpavṛkṣa is said to remain at the site even today.
- The Trishula at the temple is associated with Ādi Śaṅkarācārya’s anugraha. Local tradition also connects the name Gopeshwar with Lord Shiva’s visit to Krishna’s rāsa dance in Vrindavan, where Shiva assumed the form of a gopī. The temple continues to be an important centre of Shiva worship in the Garhwal Himalayas..
