Sant Eknāth Samādhi Temple - Paithan

The Samādhi of Sant Eknāth at Paithan is revered not only as the resting place of a महान संत, but also, in local and śāstric tradition, as a vākyārtha-sthāna—a sacred venue of philosophical dialogue and scriptural debate.
Tradition holds that this site once witnessed a remarkable assembly of scholars from diverse darśanas:
- Buddhist scholars, numbering in the hundreds
- Mīmāṁsakas, representing the discipline of ritual exegesis
- Vedāntins, expounding the vision of ultimate reality
Each group is remembered as comprising over 300 scholars, indicating both the scale and seriousness of the deliberations. These scholars are said to have engaged Adi Shankaracharya for 21 days, suggesting a sustained engagement with questions of śāstra, interpretation, and ultimate truth.
Within traditional understanding, the scale and depth of this vākyārtha are regarded as second only to Vārāṇasī, the preeminent center of learning in the Indic world. Such a comparison underscores the stature of Paithan as a major intellectual and spiritual center in its time.
