Shree Dattatreya Mandir - Kalo Dungar

A documented stop on Adi Shankaracharya's route across India.

The Dattatreya Temple at Kalo Dungar, the highest point in Kutch, is a revered shrine dedicated to Dattatreya, the unified manifestation of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
The temple houses a sacred idol along with padukas, and is known for its unique daily offering of food, traditionally believed to be accepted by animals of the surrounding hills.
Perched amidst vast stillness, this kshetra carries layers of lived tradition. Though the present structure appears relatively new, local accounts affirm that the original sanctity centered around ancient Padukas (one of which is that of Adi Shankaracharya), which continues to be preserved with deep reverence.
The region, once impacted by a powerful earthquake, has since been beautifully restored, while ensuring that the sacred Padas remain untouched in their significance.
Local belief also speaks of a connection between this kshetra and Girnar, with a cave in the vicinity said to extend toward Girnar.
Within and around this cave are several vigrahas placed along the path, some traditionally held to have been worshipped by Adi Shankaracharya.
It is also believed that Adi Shankaracharya performed anushthana here and stayed for a day, leaving behind a subtle yet enduring spiritual imprint on the kshetra.
