Adi Shankaracharya's Visit

  • Kankhal, known in the older texts as Kanakhala, is one of the ancient tīrthas of the Haridwar region. The Vāyu Purāṇa and the Mahābhārata preserve the association of this sacred region with the Yajña of Dakṣa Prajāpati, while the Skanda Purāṇa explicitly names Kanakhala as the place where Dakṣa performed his great sacrifice and where that yajña was subsequently destroyed by Mahādeva. The narrative of Dakṣa's yajña, Sati's self-offering and the manifestation of Vīrabhadra is therefore not a later temple legend but part of a much older Purāṇic sacred geography.
  • The Skanda Purāṇa further describes Kanakhala as a divine tīrtha and records the destruction of Dakṣa's sacrifice at this very place. At the centre of this sacred landscape stands Daksheshwar Mahadev, where the tradition identifies the site of Dakṣa's yajña and the presence of Śiva after the destruction of the sacrifice. The Yajña-kuṇḍa preserved within the temple precinct is revered in connection with Sati's self-offering, while the shrine of Daksheshwar Mahadev represents Śiva's enduring presence at Kanakhala. The present temple, however, should be distinguished from the antiquity of the tīrtha itself: the existing structure was subsequently reconstructed.
  • Local recitations preserved at the kṣetra remember the arrival of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya at Kanakhala nearly fifteen centuries ago, when the ancient Śivaliṅga was already present at the site. The physical form of the ancient Daksheshwar Mahadev Liṅga itself is part of this living memory. Its upper portion is now marked by a visible opening or hollow, a feature preserved as part of the shrine's identity.
  • The tradition associates this visit with what is remembered as the largest Dhārmika Sabhā convened by Adi Śaṅkarācārya. The Dhārmika Sabhā (exact site of the Sabha is to the right of the existing temple structure) is traditionally dated to Magha Śuddha Tritīyā and is said to have continued until Daśamī. A smaller gathering of approximately 16,000 saṁnyāsins is remembered as having taken place three days earlier, concluding on Chaturdaśī.
  • Saṁnyāsins are said to have come from different parts of Bhārata and, following the Sabha, Śaṅkarācārya directed them towards different regions, particularly places where the Vaidika way of life had weakened or where avaidika practices had become influential. Rather than returning to the regions from which they had come, they were entrusted with carrying the Vaidika teaching into new areas.
  • The very scale and purpose of these gatherings, as remembered in the local tradition, present Kanakhala not merely as a place associated with the ancient Dakṣa yajña, but as a centre from which Śaṅkarācārya organised the renewal and dissemination of the Vaidika sampradāya across different parts of Bhārata. In the memory of the kṣetra, therefore, the significance of Daksheshwar Mahadev extends from the Purāṇic age of Dakṣa and Sati to the later gathering attributed to Ādi Śaṅkarācārya—a continuity of Śiva worship, Vaidika tradition and dhārmika renewal centred upon the ancient tīrtha of Kanakhala.

The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
