Visited 5 October 2026 during the 2026 Sampoorna Bharata Yatra.

Adi Shankaracharya's Visit
- Chandi Devi Temple, situated on Neel Parvat on the eastern bank of the Gaṅgā at Haridwar, is one of the principal Devi shrines of the kṣetra and is traditionally regarded as a Siddha Peetha. The sacred geography of Neel Parvat is associated with the manifestation of Chandika, the fierce form of Devī who defeated Śumbha, Niśumbha and their forces.
- The shrine is also traditionally connected with the wider sacred circuit of Haridwar. Local tradition, however, identifies the deity here more specifically as Swayambhu Mangala Devi. Beside her is Kanaka Devi, while a third sacred image is worshipped as Kamba Devi, making the shrine a distinctive centre of Devi worship on Neel Parvat.
- According to local recitations, Ādi Śaṅkarācārya visited this kṣetra during his journey through the region in the 8th century CE and performed archana to the Devi.
- The shrine also preserves the tradition of a Nanda Dīpa, which is believed to have been first lit by Śaṅkarācārya and has been kept continuously as part of the worship ever since. The local understanding associates his visit with a period when other religious currents had acquired considerable influence in the region, and remembers Śaṅkara's intervention as an effort to restore confidence in the Vaidika way of life and ensure its continued practice and transmission.
- The Nanda Dīpa is thus remembered not merely as a ritual lamp, but as a symbol of the continuity of Vaidika Dharma—a light kindled for the preservation of a tradition and its transmission to generations yet to come.
The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
