Adi Shankaracharya's Visit
- Sri Bhuvaneshwari Parvati Temple at Bhoun, situated on Brahmakoot Parvat in the sacred Neelkanth region near Rishikesh, is revered as a Siddha Peetha of Maa Bhuvaneshwari. The central deity, Parvati Devi, is worshipped in the form of a Swayambhu Pindi, believed by the local tradition to be self-manifested.
- The shrine occupies a distinctive place in the sacred geography surrounding Neelkanth Mahadev. According to the tradition recorded in the Skanda Purana, Kedara Khanda, after Shiva consumed the Halahala during the Samudra Manthana, He came to the region of Manikoot, Vishnukoot and Brahmakoot, where He entered into deep samadhi to overcome the heat of the poison. Sati, searching for Shiva, is said to have reached this region and undertaken intense tapasya on the summit of Brahmakoot. It is this association with Sati’s prolonged tapasya that gives the place its character as a Siddha Peetha.
- According to the tradition preserved at the kṣetra and Shastras, Adi Shankaracharya visited Bhuvaneshwari Parvati Temple and bestowed His anugraha upon the shrine.
- His visit is traditionally dated to Mārgaśīrṣa Śuddha Dvitīyā, 613 CE. It is remembered as a day visit, with Śaṅkarācārya arriving in the morning, offering His presence and anugraha at the kṣetra, and departing in the evening. The memory of this visit forms an important part of the sacred continuity of Bhoun and is one of the traditions being brought to light through the Shaankara Jyothi Prakasha Yatra.
