Barghabhima Devi Mandir - Tamluk

A documented stop on Adi Shankaracharya's route across India.

The Bargabhima Devi Mandir is one of the most revered Devi shrines in eastern India and is traditionally recognized as the Vibhash Śakti Pīṭh , where a sacred part of Goddess Satī is believed to have fallen. Perched on an elevated platform overlooking the Rupnarayan River, the temple has remained a vibrant centre of Divine Mother worship for centuries & continues to be the presiding spiritual seat of the ancient town of Tamralipta (Tamluk).
The temple reflects a rich confluence of spiritual traditions while preserving the timeless worship of Maa Bargabhima. Devotees from across the country visit the shrine throughout the year, particularly during Durga Puja, Kali Puja and other major festivals. The sacred landscape surrounding the temple bears witness to the harmonious coexistence of the Devi (Divine Mother) , Śaiva (Lord Śiva) and Vaiṣṇava (Lord Viṣṇu) traditions.
During his historic Pan-Bharat Yatra , Jagadguru Bhagavatpada Adi Shankaracharya visited this sacred Śakti Kṣetra and offered worship to the ancient Maa Bargabhima Vigraha that was already enshrined and revered at the temple. Unlike several other kṣetras where the Acharya is traditionally associated with the consecration (Pratiṣṭhā) of new Vigrahas, at Bargabhima he worshipped the existing deity, affirming the sanctity and continuity of this ancient seat of Divine Mother worship. The Vigrahas consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya are no longer extant at this Kshetra - Adi Shankaracharya gifted an Ishwara Linga to the villagers at the time of departure which today can be found under a tree outside the shrine and within the temple complex.
