Ashwaklanta Mandir - Guwahati

Situated on the banks of the sacred Brahmaputra in North Guwahati, Ashwaklanta Temple is one of Assam's most revered temples. The presiding deity is Lord Vishnu, worshipped here in a form deeply rooted in the sacred traditions of the region. The temple is associated with the ancient tradition that Lord Kṛṣṇa halted here on his journey to subdue Narakāsura, and that his horse became weary at this spot, giving rise to the name *Aśwa-klānta* — "the place where the horse rested." The shrine houses sacred forms of Janārdana and Anantaśāyī Viṣṇu, the latter being regarded as an exquisite example of early medieval temple art. Surrounded by the serene flow of the Brahmaputra, the kṣetra has long served as a place of prayer, devotion, and contemplation for pilgrims visiting the sacred landscape of Kāmarūpa.
Local tradition further remembers this sacred site as one sanctified by the presence of Bhagavatpāda Ādi Śaṅkarācārya during his journey through Assam. Standing on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra, the temple offers devotees an opportunity to reflect upon the harmony of Bhakti and Jñāna that has characterized the spiritual heritage of the region for centuries.
Even today, Ashwaklanta remains a cherished pilgrimage centre where the blessings of Lord Viṣṇu, the sanctity of the Brahmaputra, and the enduring traditions of Sanātana Dharma continue to inspire seekers from across the land.
