Adi Shankaracharya's Visit

  • Alakanatha Mandir at Phulbagh, Bareilly, is an old Śaiva shrine maintained by the Nath Sampradāya. The temple preserves an Īśvara Liṅga that continues to be worshipped here, although this is not the Liṅga associated with Ādi Śaṅkarācārya's worship.
  • The local tradition and Shasttas maintains that the original Liṅga before which Adi Śaṅkarācārya offered worship is no longer present at the site. This distinction is important to the kṣetra's memory, preserving both the continuity of Śiva worship and the specific tradition associated with Adi Śaṅkara's visit.
  • According to local recitations, Ādi Śaṅkarācārya stayed at a place approximately half a kilometre from the present shrine during his journey through Bareilly. His presence in this region forms part of the wider sacred geography through which his journey is remembered, linking the various centres of worship at Bareily with his larger work of engaging with different communities and strengthening the Vaidika tradition.
  • Alakanatha thus remains significant not only for the Śiva worship that continues here, but also as a kṣetra within the living memory of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya's passage through the region.

The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
